The Third sector in Israel is
one of the largest in the world. Data on the numbers of
non-profits who registered with the Ministry of the Interior
over the period from 1981 through 1998 illustrates this
growth; 27,000 non-profit organizations were registered in
that time period. Recent data confirm the trend; in 2003 1,452
new organizations were registered, the same number is expected
this year (during the first 6 months of 2004, 784 new
organizations were registered).
Today there are approximately 10,000 active non profit
organizations whose activities cluster around three main
programming areas; education and welfare (28 percent),
religion (26 percent) and cultural, artistic and recreational
programs (13 percent). The sector makes a considerable
contribution to the Israeli economy and workforce; in 1995 the
non-profit sector had total expenditures of 33 billion NIS and
employed 9.3 percent of the non-agrarian work force to account
for 12.7 percent of the GDP, that year.
